I keep hearing about garcinia cambogia, and in fact, I have even seen an episode of Dr. Oz in which he talked about the benefits and how it can help with weight loss. Can you please explain exactly what it is and how it is beneficial to the body? I trust your answer more than I do the Internet.

Garcinia cambogia is a yellow fruit native to Asia, Australia, the tropical and southern regions of Africa, India and Polynesia that resembles a pumpkin, although it is much smaller. This unique ingredient comes from the tamarind fruit grown in certain parts of India and used primarily as a spice in Indian food.

Clinical trials and research reveals the power of this fruit, in that in order to burn fat, the body needs oxygen, and garcinia cambogia just happens to be full of it. So you ask, but how does it really work for weight loss? The extract, derived from the rinds of the plant, contains hydroxycitric acid, an acid that block fats and sugar while simultaneously suppressing the appetite.

Garcinia cambogia acts as an excellent weight-loss agent by reducing appetite and preventing or decreasing the formation of fat cells within the body.

Clinical research concluded that garcinia cambogia prevents formation of fat cells that result from the liver converting sugar into fat. It increases serotonin levels, which improves mood, making it easier to control eating habits. Research also concluded that it helps remove bad cholesterol from the blood stream, and it contains essential flavonoids that reduce triglycerides, phospholipids and free fatty acids.

Similarly to how anti-depressant and other psychotropic drugs can help positively impact mood, the extract uses the same mechanisms to help alleviate mood swings and reduce stress. This is a huge breakthrough for those who binge eat when feeling stressed or depressed because the garcinia cambogia extract helps stabilize levels of cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a natural hormone released in response to stress and has always - and will always - be the biggest enemy of weight loss.

While it is just as important to eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and exercise, garcina cambogia is one of the only 100 percent-natural means of helping with weight loss. When purchasing, be sure it is caffeine-free.

Thought for the week: Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.
