Joy Cardona decided to join Calhoun High School's athletic booster club four years ago.
Her daughter, Precille Cardona, was a sophomore playing on the varsity Sandcrab golf team the year she joined.
"A lot of people don't realize that this is like having a second job for us," said Cardona, 42, of Port Lavaca. "We have our day job, and the booster club becomes our second job when we get home at night."
The CHS Athletic Booster Club Inc. supports all sports at the high school, but football is how they raise all of the money used for scholarships and other supplies, Cardona said.
On average, the booster club raises about $60,000 a year through spirit accessory sales and advertising. The club contributes about $40,000 annually to the athletic department and student scholarships.
"We make the home game programs and I go over it to make sure we've got everything right for our players of the week section," Cardona said. "It's work, but we enjoy it - anything we can do for the kids. ... That's what it's all about."
Last year, the booster club awarded 16 scholarships to student athletes.
"All of this wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for the support from the community," Cardona said.
