Oct. 4, 2013 at 5:04 a.m.
The United States Postal Service on Wednesday will host a grand opening for a new village post office at Redbird Books, 2210 N. Navarro St. The event begins at 11 a.m.
Redbird Books will provide the most frequently used Postal Service products to customers during their regular retail hours. It will sell Forever stamps and offer a variety of Priority Mail flat rate boxes and envelopes.
The shop will also accept postage-paid letters and packages for free carrier pickup.
Bookstore hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
The first village post office opened Wednesday inside Day Dream Creations, 4905 N. Navarro St., Suite C.
The village post office concept rolled out in 2011 to provide customers with additional access to postal services outside of post offices' regular retail hours. About 35 percent of postal revenue comes from locations other than brick-and-mortar post offices.
Village post offices can be located in existing retail outlets such as pharmacies and grocery stores as well as town halls and government centers.
The Postal Service acknowledges the contributions of Redbird Books and new village post office owner Sherita Miller, who helped make the partnership possible.
Businesses interested in applying to start a village post office should email VPO.firstname.lastname@example.org or call 888-711-7577.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
