Art Corner: Classes and art show slated for October at the Art League
Think Art Show.
Yes, this month we will host our annual Fall Art Show and competition for adults. I hope many of you have been preparing some fantastic works to enter.
We have tried to get posters out around town, but if you need information, just give us a call at the Art League from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
We will take entries Oct. 16-17 and have a reception with the awarding of ribbons and cash prizes at 2 p.m. Oct. 20 in the gallery.
Best of Show will receive $100. The winners in each category and the People's Choice winner will receive $25 each.
The artwork will be on display through the middle of November.
All you artists out there, get your artwork finished and bring it on. We would like to have a really big showing this year, and it is only through your efforts that this will be possible.
Our very qualified judge attended the Pratt Art Institute in New York City and currently lives in Houston.
We are also getting ready for our annual Holiday Market Day in November, in which we will have booths set up in the gallery and on the patio selling all kinds of gift items for Christmas. This will also kick off our Christmas Bazaar, which will continue until Christmas. So you will have lots of opportunity to come see and buy unique gift items for that special someone. You won't know what you are missing unless you come, so start making plans to make this part of your day Nov. 23.
For those of you who might like to rent a booth, come by the Art League and sign up now so you will have the best choice of space. The spaces range from $15 to $25, depending if it is inside or open or covered patio. For more information about this, just call 361-572-0825 or come by 905 S. Bridge St. to select your space.
You have so many choices for a variety of classes and workshops in the next few weeks, and we are working hard to provide these for you as our instruction spaces are staying busy most of the time.
Jim Feig started an advanced digital photography class Sept. 28 and a beginning digital photography class began Oct. 1. Both classes will run for five sessions, once a week on the same weekday. Contact Feig at 361-576-0578.
Lem Smith will teach a three-day woodcarving workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24-26 with the goal of carving three nativity figures. Call for cost and information at 361-573-5944. Brenda Rose will have a two-day workshop making mosaic stepping stones starting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4 and Nov. 6. Contact her at 361-782-8339. You can still join our ongoing classes. Sarah Weatherly teaches children's art from 4-5:15 p.m. Tuesdays. I know many of you out there are looking for a good children's class, so here it is. Call 254-723-8080.
Sonny Timme can teach adults a variety of media and has many years of experience as an artist and instructor. You might give him a try if you are just starting out or if you are trying to improve. His number is 361-578-8722.
Gerald Bienvenu is teaching three-day workshops in watercolor; call 205-393-9455.
Paint the Town continues to have something going on four or five times a week. The classes are really in demand. Call Eunice Collins at 361-576-4043.
I also want to remind everyone that Dalhart Windberg and his son, Michael, will be teaching a three-day workshop Nov. 11-13 in the gallery of the Art League. Dalhart Windberg is an internationally acclaimed artist, so to have someone of his reputation come to Victoria to teach doesn't come along very often. So for those of you who have been waiting for someone of his caliber, now is the time. He has much experience and knowledge, which he will share with you. Call Peggy Yandell at 361-935-5549 for more information.
We will not have a meeting or demonstration in October because of our art show, and there is no artist of the month.
Windberg will give our demonstration in November. Be sure to put that on your calendar. There will be no artist of the month until after Christmas because of the art show exhibit in October and the bazaar from the last weekend of November until Christmas.
Don't forget our reception to announce winners of our Fall Art Show on Oct. 20. Come by for the next three weeks, see the show and vote for the People's Choice award, which will be announced at the end of the exhibit.
Susan and I are in the midst of a special trip to Israel. Just think of all the inspiring sights we will see and experience. Inspiration and experiences are what an artist lives for and to be able to express these in their own special way - wow, who knows what might come from this. Enjoy your special day today.
