Registration for Nov. 5 election nears deadline

Monday is the last day to register for the Nov. 5 constitutional amendment election.

The deadline to submit an application to register in person is 5 p.m. at the Victoria County Elections Office, 2805 N. Navarro St., Suite 500 at the Dr. Pattie Dodson Public Health Center.

A voter registration application placed in the mail must be postmarked no later than Monday.

New applications and changes to current registration must be submitted 30 days prior to any election. Because the 30th day falls on a weekend, the deadline is extended to the next business day.

The Texas Legislature is presenting nine propositions for voter approval. Each proposition, if approved, would amend the state constitution.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Only registered voters will be allowed to vote in this election. Victoria County will operate 36 vote centers on Election Day.

If you are already a registered voter, you do not need to register again unless your voter registration information has changed. A new residence or mailing address would be an example of a change needing correction.

If you were a registered voter in another county and have moved to a different county, you must register in your new county of residence.

The new photo ID law requires exact matching of the name on photo identification with the name on the official list of registered voters. You may check your photo ID against your voter registration certificate to see if they match. You may also check the name on the ID card against the official list of registered voters by going to VoteTexas.gov and following Register to Vote.

If the name on the photo identification does not match the name on the official list of registered voters or your voter registration certificate, you may make the change at the VoteTexas.gov website. You may also come into the Voter Registration Office.
