SUV slams into building
A Toyota 4Runner crashed into a building on Laurent Street Wednesday morning, hospitalizing the driver and 7 others.
A year-old investigation into a crash that left eight people injured has been deemed an accident.
Jesse Ortiz Bernal Jr., 56, of Victoria, was southbound in the 2700 block of North Laurent Street at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 1, 2012, when his Toyota 4Runner veered left into the northbound lane of traffic, crossed a parking lot and then plowed through an office building wall.
At least 20 people were inside the James Wayne Properties building, where Bernal's vehicle crashed.
According to a crash report filed later that day the cause of the crash was unknown.
"This case was compounded by a complex medical issue that required extensive research and follow up," Sgt. Eline Moya of the Victoria Police Department wrote in a text message. "With guidance from the District Attorney's Office it was determined that facts and evidence in this case supported this collision to be a traffic-related accident."
The investigation concluded Sept. 4. No citations were issued.
