While not following the exact guidelines of the Chinese proverb, "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime," the Victoria Boulevard Lions Club is coming close.
For more than a dozen years, the club has hosted Family Fishing Day, inviting families to fish for free at local parks.
This year's free event is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ethel Lee Tracy Park, 701 E. Larkspur St.
"It is designed for families to spend more time together," said Lynn Moore, first vice president of the club.
Moore said that rods and reels and bait are available, and Texas Game Wardens will not only offer fishing tips but will also fillet and bag the caught fish for participants.
"Last year, we had our biggest turnout ever," he said. "It was great to see so many kids with their dads having a good time."
Prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish caught, the most caught and other categories, Moore said.
On hand with educational exhibits will be the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, U.S. Coast Guard and Brackenridge Park.
No fishing license is required for this event. The Lions Club will also have a concession stand on site.
The event is made possible through cooperation with the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department, Moore said.
