The mother of a 9-year-old child who slammed his bike into a moving truck cries in the arms of the pickup driver at the scene of the wreck.

A 9-year-old Victoria boy riding his bike slammed into the side of a moving pickup Saturday at a southside neighborhood intersection but dodged serious injuries.

The aftermath of the collision frightened neighbors and the boy's mother as Victoria Fire Department personnel placed Efren Arguello in a neck brace and onto a backboard to load him into an ambulance. His head was cut from broken glass and smeared with blood.

Sgt. Jeff Strauss of the Victoria Police Department said Arguello was taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro, where he was treated for cuts and bruises and later released. Other tests indicated no critical internal injuries.

Strauss said Arguello was riding his bicycle south on Wheeler Street when he collided with a black Mazda pickup driven by Eliodoro Guerra, 54, of Victoria, who was traveling east on Water Street.

The pickup had the right of way, Strauss said, and Arguello went through the intersection and could not stop.

Arguello struck the driver's side window with his head, shattering the glass, Strauss said.
