Schupbach enjoys week of bowling

Oct. 16, 2013 at 5:16 a.m.

Kenny Schupbach crushed the pins in the two local leagues that he competes in for an enjoyable week.

In spite of two open frames during Red River League action, Kenny was consistently striking to earn the high series weekly honors.

He hammered the pocket for games of 246, 230, and 268 to total 744 for the night.

Schupbach also rolled a 247 high game and 698 set in another league.

Two of the area's highly competitive bowlers achieved a near-perfect game while competing in the Red River League.

Mike Stacy started league play with 10 strikes in a row before a solid 7-pin stopped the lefthander's bid for a 300 game, and he finished with a 289 game.

After starting the second game with six strikes in a row, I thought he was on his way to an 800 series. Unfortunately, a 7-pin split open in the 7th frame, stopped his string of strikes and he lost his carry due to subtle changes on the lanes. Stacy finished with a 738 series.

Tom Crowe took up the challenge in his second game and started with 11 strikes in a row before tugging the ball on the 12th ball, and he finished with a 297 game and a 715 set.

Although not a high average bowler, Howard Tesch matched Crowe in rolling 11 strikes in the second game, but his non-strike ball was in the middle of the game and he finished with a 279 game.

Steve Dickinson and Russell Mason also broke the 700 mark with scores of 266-719 and 701 respectively.

Other scores of note for the men were T.J. Mooney (269-695/692), Tony Bennett (247-683), Jacob Silgero (681/657/265-656), DoLee Knowlan (248-677), Bobby Mowles (676), Darryl Mergele (664), Mike Wortham (662),Randy Vivero (651), Dave Matthews (257-649), Gary Hatter Jr. (649), John Oswalt (279), Tesch (279), Jay Rhymer (261), Joe Wittenburg (258), Pedro Alva (256), Kevin Stacy (255), Todd Pfuhl (254), Calvin Bigham (253), and Joe Rodriguez was zoned in with a 249 high game in the Red River League.

Olivia Jackson was high for the women while competing in the Sugar & Spice League.

She rolled a 234 high game, which contributed to a 574 total.

Bailey Koebrick posted a great 247 high game on her way to a 567 total.

Other nice games for the women were Denise Gabrysch 236 and Delores Stroud 227.

Vera Cruz Restaurant bowlers for the week were Russell Mason 767 (Sugar & Spice) and Helen Gibbs 717 (Over The Hill).

It is with regret that I note another former local bowler, Denise Schustereit Dodd, having passed away.

Denise was the daughter of Dixie and Leonard Schustereit, who enjoyed bowling at the Woodlawn Lanes in the 1970s. Their kids enjoyed bowling as well.

My condolences and sympathy are with the family.

Leonard passed away several years ago but I remember him as a teammate on the Texaco bowling team that competed in the Red River League in 1956.
