Class 3A: Tre'Vontae Hights, Yoakum
Class 2A: Dalton Sturm, Goliad
Yoakum's Tre'Vontae Hights was not completely satisfied with his performance against Cuero.
Hights scored on a 72-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and rushed 29 times for 188 yards and three touchdowns.
He completed 6 of 9 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown. Hights also returned a kickoff 23 yards, and had nine tackles, including five solo stops as the Bulldogs claimed a 41-20 District 26-3A win over their DeWitt County rivals.
"I would say it was not my best game of the season," Hights said. "I know I played well, but I felt it was more of a team effort."
Hights' performance was good enough for the junior to be selected as the Class 3A Ford Built Tough Texas High School Football Player of the Week Award.
"I'm very honored," Hights said. "It makes it that much more special that it was against our rivals in a big game."
Yoakum coach Brent Kornegay was happy for Hights, who has taken on a bigger role this season.
"There's not a kid who deserves it more," Kornegay said. "He's very humble and he knows that he would not be able to do it without his teammates."
Hights is an outstanding all-around athlete. He plays basketball and qualified for last season's state track and field meet in four events, winning a gold medal in the triple jump.
Hights has passed for 629 yards and five touchdowns without an interception, and has rushed for 915 yards and 15 touchdowns to help Yoakum get off to a 2-0 start in district.
"He's just that type of athlete," Kornegay said. "We run an up-tempo offense and he has the unique ability to make that work. We've done a lot of things to get him the football and he's responded."
Hights wants to make sure the Bulldogs continue their success Friday when they visit Gonzales.
"We have to make sure we're keeping up the tempo," he said, "on both sides of the football."
