A Victoria police officer and two other motorists were taken to hospitals late Thursday after being involved in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of North Navarro Street and Loop 463.

The condition of the three drivers were not immediately available early Friday morning, but the officer involved, Sgt. Kelly Luther, was complaining of head pains after the crash, said Lt. Mike Tatum of the Victoria Police Department.

Police later arrested 23-year-old Cody W. Parker, who was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado, on suspicion of driving while under the influence, said patrol Sgt. Julian Huerta. A hometown for Parker was not available.

The crash, which was reported just after 11 p.m., left the three vehicles heavily damaged on the northbound lanes in the 7000 block of North Navarro Street. Officials had to close all three lanes for a few hours, diverting traffic onto the frontage road near the Shell gas station, as they helped the injured and investigated the cause.

Tatum said the crash occurred when a Dodge Charger, driven by Tina Ann Garcia, 38, had run out of gas just before entering the intersection and was sitting in one of the northbound lanes. Luther had stopped behind the Charger to assist the driver; the lights on her patrol car were illuminated and flashing.

Moments later, the white Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Parker, slammed into the back end of the police car while Luther was sitting in the driver's seat. The police car was then pushed into the back end of the Charger, Tatum said.

Luther was taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro. Parker and Garcia were taken to Citizens Medical Center. All three drivers were wearing their seat belts.

Victoria police, Victoria County sheriff's deputies, Victoria paramedics and the Victoria Fire Department responded to the crash.
