Although it's been decades since she's had a student in the Yoakum school district, Elorine Sitka has remained an active member of the high school's athletic booster club for the last 35 years.
"It's very important for a community to support its kids," Sitka, 68, said. "They're our future citizens, and this is what they need to keep them focused."
The Yoakum Bulldog Booster Club spends about $25,000 a year supporting the athletic program, said Layne Brandt, booster club president.
About 20 to 30 members meet every Monday night to plan the upcoming activities and to receive a report on upcoming games from the athletic director, Brandt said.
Last week, Yoakum beat its rival, Cuero High School.
"It was a big game," Brandt said. "We were extremely happy with the victory."
