Calhoun County livestock auction sets records
Buyers at the Calhoun County Junior Livestock Auction paid a record-breaking $343,232 for 128 animals this year.
"Unlike sports that occupy much time, these projects can be sold in the end, and the money can either go to next year's projects or to college funds," said Chris Wall, livestock auction co-chairman.
Although 2012 sales dipped more than $32,000 from 2011, this year's sales surpassed both years' totals. The sale this year brought $70,252 more than last year's and $37,959 more than 2011's.
"The kids work hard on their projects seven days per week from start to end," Wall said. "It's a big commitment, and it teaches them a lot."
