Local triathletes compete at Austin Tri Rock

Team Beauty and the Beasts took second place at the second annual Austin Tri Rock triathalon competition. Team members include, from left: Casey Roth, Amber Smolik and John Klemczyk.

The streets of downtown Austin were alive as approximately 1,500 amateur athletes hit the streets for the 2nd annual Austin Tri Rock.

Former Ironman world champion, Chris "Macca" McCormack, was there to race as well.

The swim takes place in Lady Bird Lake, with a transition onto the bike for a fast-paced bike course through the downtown streets of Austin.

The triathlon concludes with a run along Auditorium Shores and around the Congress Avenue area.

The sprint course consisted of a 700-meter swim, a 16.7-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run.

There were a total of 638 competitors in this race, with 364 males and 274 women.

Leana Elliott was the top area finisher with a second-place finish in the 35-39 age category and seventh overall. She crossed the finish line in a time of 1 hour, 33 minutes and 33 seconds, averaging 2:10 per 100 meters on the swim, 20.3 mph on the bike and 7:43 per mile on the run.

Other finishers in the sprint race were: Kim Simmons, 9th 55-59 age group, 1:48:01 (swim-2:10/100m, bike-18.3 mph, run-9:57/mile); Caleb Henderson, 21st 25-39 age group, 1:50:40 (swim-2:56/100m, bike-16.6 mph, run-7:53/mile); Shayne Bollman, 17th 55-59 age group, 1:57:34 (swim-2:54/100m, bike-17.4 mph, run-10:58/mile); Roger Gibson, 46th 40-44 age group, 2:09:48 (swim 2:09/100m, bike-13.9 mph, run-11:40/mile).

The Olympic course consisted of a 1,500-meter swim, a 24.8-mile bike and a 6.2-mile run.

There were 744 total competitors in this race with 520 males and 224 women.

Denise Tomanek was the top area finisher in this race with her sixth place finish in the 35-39 age group and 30th overall female. She finished in a time of 2:42:13, averaging 2:08 per 100 meters in the swim; 19.7 mph on the bike; and 7:51 per mile on the run.

Other finishers in the Olympic distance were: Bill Talley, 56th 40-44 age group, 3:01:39 (swim-2:39/100m, bike-18.9 mph, run-9:11/mile); Juan Schiavone, 59th 40-44 age group, 3:02:12 (swim-2:07/100m, bike-18.4 mph, run-9:50/mile); Tyler Bollmann, 21st 20-24 age group, 3:07:25 (swim-2:43/100m, bike-17.6 mph, run-8:53/mile); John Luna, 99th 40-44 age group, 3:43:20 (swim-3:03/100m, bike-17.1 mph, run-13:18/mile).

In the Olympic relay division, it was fast-paced race and close, with Team Beauty and the Beasts barely edging out of the top place on podium.

They placed second, getting beat to the line by only ten seconds, finishing in a time of 2:15:55.

The team consisted of Amber Smolik, John Klemczyk and Casey Roth.

Smolik swam the 1,500-meter swim in a time of 22:33, averaging 1:30 per 100 meters. Klemczyk covered the 24.8-mile bike course in a time of 1:08:38; averaging 21.7 mph. Casey Roth brought the team home with his time of 41:20 on the 10K run course, averaging 6:40 per mile.
