The American Book Review series has brought some amazingly talented writers and speakers to Victoria over the past few years. And this year looks to be no different.

We are especially excited to see an author with connections to Victoria will be starting the series this year. Elizabeth Hand, a science fiction writer, used to visit her grandmother, who was a librarian at the Victoria Public Library when it was housed in what is now the Nave Museum. Hand's mother went to a Victoria high school when she was a teen. When Hand was a child, she would visit a farm near Victoria that her family continues to maintain today.

Hand has published 17 novels, four collections, six novelizations of movies and TV shows, the comic book "Anima," several book reviews and articles and four Star Wars kids' books. That is an impressive portfolio, and we look forward to listening as she shares her thoughts and creative process with our community.

We know Victoria is a town full of wonderful, creative people, and we are proud to see a woman with a connection to our community come back to share her story of success with us. We welcome Hand to Victoria and hope it still reminds her of the good times she enjoyed as a child. While she enjoys the nostalgic return to a place from her childhood memories, we look forward to appreciating the talents that she has developed over the years and growing through the experience.

The beginning of the ABR series is always an exciting time, and we know the community will once again come out to support UHV and the speakers it is hosting. We think opening the series with an author with connections to our community is a wonderful idea. Welcome back to Victoria, Elizabeth Hand. We hope it's even better than you remember it.
