Traffic Tip: Vehicles entering road from private driveway must yield
Watch out when leaving a private drive.
Recently, I have noticed an increase in motor vehicle crashes as a result of people failing to yield the right of way when exiting a private drive.
The most common reason for this is what I call "the nice guy." Let me give you an example.
You want to exit the Sonic Drive-In onto John Stockbauer Drive. You pull to the exit, and there are cars stopped for the light at Mockingbird Lane. The "nice guy" in the outside lane on John Stockbauer stops to let you in and waves you on. You exit, thinking that you've got it made.
Unknown to you, there is a car traveling on the inside lane who didn't know the "nice guy" let you in and never sees you exiting.
Boom! There is a crash, and guess whose fault it is?
Nope, not the "nice guy" or the guy driving on John Stockbauer - it's you.
Be aware that there are sometimes more lanes of traffic than the closest one to you when exiting a private drive.
