Revelations: Pastor Bill Hassel is a blessing

I've said it before, but one of my favorite people in this town is the Rev. Bill Hassel.

He's probably one of my favorite people anywhere, really.

You may know him as the Crossroads' mouthpiece for raising money for ALS, or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Or perhaps you know him as First English Lutheran's former pastor, who stepped down after his body deteriorated from the illness he now champions.

But to me, he's just Pastor Bill. He's my friend. He's the man who reminds me that my situation is never as bad as I think it is. And he reminds me that people are imperfect, God is not, and life is about laughing - loud and open-mouthed.

He inspires me daily and reminds me often how much a person can accomplish for the Lord, even when we lose our ability to speak and walk like we used to.

And Pastor Bill is a man who will continue to figure out ways to defy his physical limitations and serve the Lord.

The other day, he sent me an email, asking if I had ever heard of "blessing the veil."

I hadn't.

I asked him if it was a song or poem.

But he explained that it was an actual blessing, a prayer, said over a bride's veil.

He wrote the blessing and wanted me to look it over for feedback.

I agreed.

And while reading his beautiful prayer for fiancees, Brittney Louise Stange and Bryan Smith, I was once again reminded that the retired Pastor Bill still serves a vast flock.

There are others, many others, who look to him for his wisdom and spiritual guidance.

And that I am simply one among the flock.

I was pleased to share a brief moment of Brittney's love for Pastor Bill.

And I pray your veil is blessed by the Lord, and your marriage to Bryan is long and God-centered.

Thanks, Pastor Bill, for being such a blessing in others' lives.

And thanks Brittney, for allowing me to share in your blessing of the veil.
