Mid Coast Hurricane and Disaster Conference to focus on hazards of disasters
The 2014 Mid Coast Hurricane and Disaster Conference will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 24 at the Victoria Community Center, 2905 E. North St.
It will be presented by Golden Crescent Healthcare Coalition.
Registration will open at 8 a.m. with a light continental breakfast. Lunch will also be provided.
The purpose of the conference is to provide information on hazards from both natural and man-made disasters and provide training and information for first responders, health care professionals, critical infrastructure representatives, public sector employees, business leaders, energy representatives and industry representatives in the case of a local disaster, according to a news release.
The conference originally began as training and networking opportunities for first responders and industry representatives prior to hurricane season. The conference has been well attended during the years, attracting more than 300 attendees from 16 area counties.
This year's conference will open with a general session presented by retired Lt. Gen. P.K. Carlton, who will discuss the tornado recovery efforts at St. John's Mercy Medical Center during the aftermath of the Joplin, Mo., tornadoes.
The conference will also have six breakout sessions with panels and demonstrations, including sessions by the Golden Crescent regional hospitals, the Texas Baptist Men, the Texas Division of Emergency Management and a Skywarn panel discussion on weather tracking.
In addition, there will also be a session from the Texas Department of Public Safety regarding the Texas/Mexico Border Wars and a panel discussion with the city emergency preparedness staff.
The luncheon keynote speaker will be Victor Wells, the Texas Emergency Medical Task Force program manager for the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council.
John Metz, the warning coordination meteorologist from the National Weather Service Corpus Christi office, will present a general wrap-up session on the upcoming hurricane season.
Registration for the conference is $15 and includes lunch. To preregister, visit strac.org/index.php/midcoastconf14 and use a credit card. Registration is also available at the door.
