Food service inspections

The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.

FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING APRIL 4

Mexico Tipico, 421 N. Virginia St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 40. Improper cold-hold temperature. Wash hands in between tasks. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Cover food in walk-in cooler and other coolers. Must use gloves when cutting vegetables. Date-label food with a seven-day use-by date. Sanitizer rags must be kept in sanitizer buckets. Manager did not demonstrate knowledge. Need thermometer in white refrigerator. Clean the ice machine. All items must go through the three-step process of wash, rinse and sanitize. Do not cover up the results of the last inspection posted on the wall. Five facility or equipment violations.

Taqueria La Finca, 2640 W. Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 33. Improper cold-hold temperature. Hand sink is for hand-washing only. Store raw chicken below beef. Need to date-label. Coke cooler is for prepackaged foods only. Keep hand sink clear. Dispose of chipped dishes. Dishes need to be put through the three-step cleaning process. Three facility or equipment violations.

Cathy's Too, 802 Fulton St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 30. Improper cold-hold temperature. Wash hands before handling lettuce. Discard any potentially hazardous foods that have been in the refrigerator not holding at 41 degrees or below over four hours. Use gloves when handling lettuce. Store raw fish container below potato salad container. Label spray bottles. Need thermometer at tabletop. Three facility or equipment violations.

Texana Food Mart, 1021 S. Wells St., Edna. Demerits: 28. Wash hands in between tasks. Packaged food for self-service needs to have proper labeling. Dispose of out-of-date milk and medication. Keep time on hot food under 135 degrees. Keep soap and paper towels at the hand sink. Wash dishes with the required three steps. Need thermometers in tabletop and small silver cooler. Find and post the 2014 permit. Four facility or equipment violations.

Daniel's Tacos, 902 W. Main St., Edna. Demerits: 24. Improper cold-hold temperature. Cover all foods in cooler. Store chicken below cooked foods. Date-label cooked, ready-to-eat foods with a seven-day use-by date. Keep hand-washing sink accessible. Keep paper towels at the hand sink. Clean and sanitize tables. Discard bag of flour. Wipe down the tables. Cover holes in the walls where dishwashing machine is located. Four facility or equipment violations.

Bayside Seafood Restaurant, 2055 state Highway 35 North, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 15. Improper cold-hold temperature. Discard any potentially hazardous foods that have been in the cooler more than four hours. Do not store flour sifter in the trash can. Clean the ice machine. Two facility or equipment violations.

Olde Victoria Grill, 207 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 9. Keep paper towels at hand sink. Label spray bottles. Need thermometer in refrigerator. Three facility or equipment violations.

TMC - Port Lavaca Head Start, 424 S. Seadrift St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 8. Wash hands before putting on gloves. Wear gloves when handling ready-to-eat foods.

Iron Culinary Solutions, Inc., 838 state Highway 72 South, Yorktown. Demerits: 7. Upgrade the size of water heater. Not sufficient capacity of hot water. Keep soap at the hand-washing sink and paper towels in restroom. Keep utensils with handles in the same direction for customer service. Need light shields in food preparation areas. One facility or equipment violation.

Edna Junior High School, 606 Gilbert St., Edna. Demerits: 4. Employee drinks need lids and straws. There should be no employee food consumption in the kitchen area.

Holiday Inn Express, 2629 state Highway 35 North, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 4. Date-label food with a seven-day use-by date.

Taco Poco Loco, 403 S. Laurent St., Victoria. Demerits: 4. Improper cold-hold temperature.

TMC Bloomington Head Start, 204 S. Leonard Ave., Bloomington; Palacios Mexican Restaurant, 114 E. Main St., Edna; Our Lady of the Gulf Day Care, 412 W. Austin St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 3.

REINSPECTIONS

Taqueria La Finca, 2640 W. Main St., Port Lavaca, inspected March 27 with 33 demerits. Reinspected April 1 with most violations corrected.

Angelica's Mexican Restaurant III, 444 W. Main St., Yorktown, inspected Feb. 13 with 54 demerits. Reinspected March 26 with violations corrected.
