Victoria County Sheriff's Office deputies confiscated almost 300 pounds of marijuana from a traffic stop Wednesday near U.S. 59.

A 22-year-old Rio Grande City man was arrested in Victoria after deputies found almost 300 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of his car.

George Rolando Garcia was being held Thursday at the Victoria County Jail.

His bond was set at $50,000.

Garcia was pulled over near U.S. 59 on Wednesday on suspicion of a window tint violation on his four-door sedan.

Garcia gave a Victoria County Sheriff's Office deputy consent to search his car, where a large amount of marijuana, weighing 274 pounds, was found in the trunk, according to a criminal complaint.

Sheriff's office Lt. Thomas Eisman said the seizure represents one of the first significant cases worked by the new special operations unit at the Victoria County Sheriff's Office. The unit, which is comprised of about 20 officers ranging from analytical specialists to federal agents, was put together earlier this year.

Garcia was arrested on suspicion of possession of between 50 and 2,000 pounds of marijuana, a second-degree felony. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
