Art Corner: Spring Youth Art Show this month
By Bill Bauer
Our 2014 Youth Art Show is fast approaching.
As I write this, youth in Victoria and the surrounding areas still have time to create or finish that special work of art for our spring show.
So get busy, and bring some of your creations to the Victoria Art League to enter them from 1 to 6 p.m. April 30 or May 1. Entry fee is $5 for one to two entries. Only original 2-D or 3-D work will be accepted. At 2 p.m. May 4, we will have a reception, where $100 will be awarded to each of the Best of Show winners in elementary, middle school and high school.
The show will remain up until May 30, so you can come and view the artwork and vote for a $25 People's Choice Award, which will be awarded at the end of the month.
Entry forms and rules about entries can be picked up from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at Victoria Art League, 905 S. Bridge St., by visiting VictoriaArtLeague.net, in our monthly newsletter or on our Facebook page, Victoria Art League.
Jim Feig will start another beginner's photography class from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays starting April 8. This is a very popular class, so if you ever wanted to know how to use all those gadgets on your camera; now's the time. Contact Feig at 361-576-0578 or 361-649-8738.
We also would like to have children's classes throughout the summer and possibly a children's workshop, but to do this, we need children.
If you are interested in children's classes for the summer, call Claire Santellana at 361-894-7380 or 218-9566 or for the children's one-week workshop, call Sarah Weatherly at 723-8080. Sarah also plans to teach Painting the Town sessions for children 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, from June 18 through Aug. 13. Please call to let them know whether there is enough interest to start preparations.
Painting the Town for adults, children, youth and parties are continuing throughout the week. For a fun time painting with friends or a getaway for yourself, contact Eunice Collins at 361-576-4043.
We will not have our regular monthly meeting this month because of the Easter holiday.
One of our members, Mary Smith, won Best of Show at the Corpus Christi Art League Annual Membership Exhibit. She won with her pastel, "Aguirre Spring." Congratulations, Mary.
Also, Dave Ludlow and I have an exhibit of our work showing now through April at the library. He is exhibiting his oil paintings, and I am showing my pottery. Please come by and see our artwork, then go south about a few blocks to the Art League building to see some more art on our newly lighted gallery walls.
Speaking of our new lighting, which I mentioned last month, we continued our renovations this month with a complete remodel of our bathrooms, including new fixtures and paint, while trying to keep with the character of our historic building.
It's springtime. Time to get out and smell the roses, see nature at its best and breathe some fresh spring air. So while you are out, come by for a visit to the Victoria Art League.
