Two women were taken to the hospital Sunday morning after the pickup they were in rolled on State Highway 185 near Farm-to-Market Road 1686.

Shelby Steelman, 17, of Victoria, was driving a 2006 Ford pickup southbound at 5 a.m. when she swerved to the right to miss a deer, hitting a mailbox and one-way sign, said Department of Safety spokesman trooper Gerald Bryant.

She then swerved back left, crossing both lanes, went into the median and tried to steer back to the right, rolling the pickup twice, Bryant said. The pickup came to rest on its right side.

Steelman and the passenger, Kerstee Wilkes, 21, of Hamshire, were taken to Citizens Medical Center, Bryant said.

Steelman was in good condition, and Wilkes was in serious condition Sunday evening, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
