With the STAAR testing so prominently upon us, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our VISD family members for their outstanding efforts to serve as a Champion for our Children. As I visit the campuses and departments across our "612 Square Miles of Excellence," I am always amazed by the passion, commitment and dedication that they display toward our students and toward each other. When describing the power of the VISD, I am reminded of the words of Krish Dhanam: "The message is clear: Plan with an attitude, prepare with aptitude, participate with servitude, receive with gratitude, and this should be enough to separate you from the multitudes."
We are currently involved in STAAR testing for our elementary and middle schools, and we are one week away from the next round of STAAR testing in our high schools. We are so proud of all of our VISD stakeholders and their efforts to help our students shine. A wonderful example of rising to the challenge can be found at Victoria East High School. Principal Lisa Blundell reported that last week, 118 students attended after-school tutorials for biology and algebra I end-of-course exams. It is so heartening to see our students so dedicated to success and to see our teachers and staff so committed to providing our students every opportunity to excel.
The spring semester also brings with it the sounds of beautiful music throughout our school district as our student musicians have been earning top awards at the recent UIL competition. Congratulations to the VISD middle school and high school orchestras on their exceptional performances this past week. On Tuesday, the VISD middle and high school orchestras both earned the Sweepstakes Award, which is the highest UIL award presented. We are so proud of our extraordinary students and staff. We would also like to thank our parents and the Victoria Symphony for their assistance and support in making our VISD orchestra program so exceptional. Our VISD Fine Arts Director Ken Peach described it best when he stated, "It was a perfect day."
We are also excited to announce that Saturday, a VISD graduate who is now a professional musician will be coming back home to Victoria to work with our high school orchestra members as part of a special event. Ivan Trevino will be joined by the other members of the highly successful group, Break of Reality, to provide a workshop and performance opportunities for our students. The band is in Victoria for the Victoria Fine Arts Association Jam Fest on Saturday and is devoted to promoting music education in schools across the nation. Mark Twain once said, "To get the full value of joy, you must have someone to divide it with." On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire VISD, thank you for supporting our schools and providing a future of hope and endless possibilities to our students.
