EDNA - The lassos were flying Saturday morning as rider after rider chased down steers in the arena at the Brackenridge Events Center during Rope for the Kids.

The annual event, which is in its eighth year, is a fundraiser for the Golden Crescent Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Golden Crescent CASA was established in 1995 to provide trained community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in the court system. CASA is active in Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties, according to the organization's website.

Along with three rounds of roping, the event also featured a silent auction, live auction, raffle and barbecue cook-off to raise money.

David Rutherford, one of the board members for the competition, said last year's event raised about $40,000 for the nonprofit. He hoped to surpass that figure this year.

Richard Meyer, of Port Lavaca, an original committee member of the fundraiser, said the event takes a lot of hard work.

"It's a lot of hard work to put these things on, but we feel it's worthwhile," Meyer said. "Anything we can do for the kids, that's what we want to do."

As of Monday, the amount raised was still being tabulated, but Tim Hornback, executive director of Golden Crescent CASA, said they should know the total by the end of the week.

"It looks like it should be another record-breaking year," he said.
