UHV freshman named AII Athlete of the Week

University of Houston-Victoria first baseman Shelby Smith hits the ball during the second game in a doubleheader against Our Lady of the Lake University at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.

UHV freshman Shelby Smith has been recognized as the Association of Independent Institutions Female Athlete of the Week after compiling a 0.818 batting average in games against Huston-Tillotson and Texas College last week.

Smith hit 9 for 11 with three doubles, three triples, five RBI and six runs scored, according to a release.

The first baseman has a 0.486 batting average in 43 games this season with a .0723 slugging percentage and 0.519 on-base percentage. She holds the team-high in doubles with 17 and has hit four home runs and three triples with 50 RBIs and 43 runs scored.

The Jaguars will play in the AII Softball Championships starting Thursday in Lawrenceville, Ga.

UHV will play the University of British Columbia at 10 a.m. Thursday. The winner will play California State-San Marcos at 3 p.m. while the loser will play Friday at 10 a.m.
