A sedan that failed to yield as it crossed U.S. Highway 59 sent one man to the hospital Friday afternoon, said Department of Public Safety Trooper Ruben San Miguel.
"They were all wearing seat belts; otherwise, it would most likely have been a fatal crash," San Miguel said.
Ashley Nicole Jones, 16, of Victoria, was northbound on U.S. Highway 59 about 3:40 p.m. near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 444 in Inez when she turned her 2007 Acura sedan to cross the highway.
The teenager failed to yield to Mark S. Olivier, 52, of Raceland, La., who was southbound on the highway in a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. Olivier swerved but could not avoid hitting the right front quarter of the Acura.
The truck skidded, rolled more than three times and landed on the passenger side in a grassy ditch on the west side of the highway.
Jones received a citation for failure to yield the right of way.
Michael Curtis Hudsteth, 37, of Lacombe, La., the only passenger in the truck, was transported to Citizens Medical Center with fractured ribs and spent the night for observation. He was in stable condition Saturday afternoon.
The highway was closed to one lane for two hours while emergency responders cleared the scene.
