The countdown is on to the first bell of the 2014-15 school year.

Three weeks from today, more than 14,000 Victoria school district students will be back in class and starting a new adventure.

Before that first day, much is happening in preparation for this big event.

Starting this week, all campuses are hosting registrations. The registration process confirms information we have on file and provides additional information for parents and the school to share. All parents are strongly encouraged to register now and not wait until the first day of school.

Elementary school registration is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Parents of students whose last names begin with the letters A through L are asked to register Wednesday. All other parents are asked to register Thursday.

Parents of students entering the eighth-grade are asked to register between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday. Seventh-grade registration is Friday, and sixth-grade registration is Aug. 11. Seventh- and sixth-grade registration are also from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Any parent who misses the scheduled registration time is encouraged to register Aug. 12 during regular school office hours.

For high school students, senior registration is on from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Juniors will register at the same time Thursday and sophomores the same time Friday.

Freshmen registration is from noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 11. The makeup day is Aug. 12 during regular office hours.

When registering your child, please remember to bring up-to-date immunization records and proof of residence. Parents of first-time VISD students will also need to bring other documents, such as a birth certificate or other legally recognized document that indicates the age of the child. Please call your school for details on documents required for enrollment.

While students do not return to class until Aug. 25, our teachers have figuratively been in class throughout the summer learning more about improving teaching techniques, course content and a host of other important skills.

Our administrators have reported almost every training offered this summer has been completely filled. It is a testament to the dedication of our teachers that they are willing to spend their summers developing more skills to help every child become successful.

Another group of teachers will be gathering for five days of intensive training starting Wednesday. All the new teachers in VISD will participate in the VISD New Teacher Academy. During the five days of the academy, our new teachers will be learning about everything from email to lesson planning, classroom management to special education practices and curriculum to teaching techniques. During those five days, the teachers will be welcomed and honored as the newest members of the critical team that will work diligently in helping our students be successful.

Every VISD employee plays a critical part in the success of our schools and the students in them.

As we welcome the newest members of the team, we celebrate dedication, determination and all the possibilities that a new job presents.

And I close with a reminder that there is still room on the VISD team for people who love children and believe in creating a bright future for them. Check the VISD website for job openings or contact our Human Resources Office at 361-788-9228.
