Susan and I just returned from a Caribbean cruise and really enjoyed the warmer atmosphere, especially with this cold spell hitting us just as we returned.
You know, an artist can see beauty in all kinds of places - whether it be the waves on the ocean, the gorgeous sunsets on a beach in the tropics or icicles hanging on a trash can lid.
The colors of a rainbow after an afternoon shower just seem to be a symbol of the artists' palette. Let's just say that we enjoyed our time away, but it is always good to come home.
Of course, I will now be going to Pagosa Springs, Colo., to do some skiing with my oldest son's family, especially those grandkids. So the scenery will again change to snow and mountains. It sure is good to be retired.
Things are really happening at the Victoria Art League this month with renovations in full swing. Wendt Electric has removed our lighting in the gallery, and after Padron Painting repairs and repaints the ceiling, it be installing quality gallery lighting, fans and basically making its gallery a "top of the line" place to exhibit art.
We are so excited to get another renovation checked off our list.
Once again, we want to thank all those who have contributed to our building fund by grants, individual gifts and the city of Victoria hotel occupancy tax funds.
Because of the renovations, there will not be much going on in the gallery.
But Jim Feig is teaching some photography classes, and I will offer beginning pottery starting Feb. 10 from 1-4 p.m. or 6-9 p.m. and intermediate pottery starting Feb. 13 from 1-4 p.m. or 6-9 p.m. Call me at 361-649-8309 or 361-575-3216 for more information or to sign up.
Mark Keathley, our local renowned oil painter, will be our demo artist at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 9 for our monthly meeting. Come early to get some coffee and visit with the members.
Keathley has a workshop the last of this month, and there is a waiting list if you are interested.
Rita Kirkman, our demo artist last month, held a very successful workshop on pastels in January. I know the participants received a lot from such a well-known pastel artist. Eunice Collins from Paint the Town and Marc and Lisa Hinojosa hosted our booth at the annual bridal fair and greeted many Victorians, showing them the possibility of renting our historic and beautiful facility for bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and even weddings. We invite you to come and see what is available at 905 S. Bridge St., from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. You can see what is going on by visiting: victoriaartleague.net or Facebook-Victoria Art League.
Open your eyes to the beauty of all that is around you and explore new outlets of expressing that beauty through the visual arts.
Bill Bauer is president of the Victoria Art League.
