Editor's Note: To help voters learn more about the candidates, the Advocate is printing profiles in contested races in the March 4 Democratic and Republican parties primaries. Sunday's profiles spotlight candidates for the Republican Party nomination for county commissioner Precinct 4 in Lavaca County. The winner of this race will not have a Democratic Party opponent in the Nov. 4 general election.

Dennis W. Kocian

• Age: 56

• City/county of residence: Yoakum, Lavaca County

• Occupation: Lavaca County commissioner, Precinct 4

• Political party: Republican

• Office seeking: Lavaca County commissioner, Precinct 4

Why do you want to serve in this position?

I have enjoyed serving as Lavaca County commissioner for the past 10 years and would like to continue to work with and for the citizens of Lavaca County. I want to continue to work as a team with the commissioners court to make the best decisions for Precinct 4 and for the entire county with a focus on running our county as efficiently as possible.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

My last 10 years as commissioner along with the numerous hours of training I've had to stay up-to-date with the regulations, laws and statutes of county government are of utmost importance. Also, I have an objective attitude when considering new projects or ideas for the county - carefully looking at pros and cons of any project we undertake and at the same time keeping in mind the citizens' needs and point of view.

If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

I would continue to work as I always have - with honesty, responsibility and good moral judgment. In addition to that, I have always welcomed my constituents to call or stop by anytime. I am available to openly discuss their concerns. I always explain that I don't believe in making promises or commitments that can't be met. My discussion with the constituent involves what can be done to address their concern and provide the best solution within the means of the county.

Mark A. Wick

• Age: 55

• City/county of residence: Hallettsville/Lavaca

• Occupation: Environmental construction manager/rancher/builder

• Political party: Republican

• Office seeking: Lavaca County commissioner, Precinct 4

Why do you want to serve in this position?

I want to make a difference by making a positive contribution on behalf of the citizens of Lavaca County and Precinct 4. County commission work is complex work - it's not just maintaining roads and bridges. I'm fortunate to be able to say that if elected, I will be 100 percent dedicated to my constituents and our county business. Commissioner will be my only full-time job. I will work hard to get the job done, including evenings and oftentimes weekends. I feel those who can, have a duty and obligation to commit to public service. I'm ready for the opportunity to serve.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I'm aware of the lack of representation of our smaller communities when it comes to the larger picture of government. Growing up here and living the better part of my adult life in Ezzell gives me a basis and understanding of our local environment and our way of life that I fully intend to enhance if elected. I recognize the balance of services required between rural and urban areas and will ensure all areas are represented fairly while making sure that our county is not only a good place to live but also a great place to visit, invest, relocate, raise a family and retire.

If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

I will do my best to be open and accessible and support responsible policies. I will handle the taxpayers' money responsibly. I am conservative and strongly believe in low taxation, unitization of county equipment, proper funding for our sheriff's department and jail and enhanced sheriff's patrol of our rural areas. I will continue to be guided by my Christian principles and values. I will serve with integrity and honesty and will always vote the will of my constituents. I will be your voice in local government. I am eager and would be honored to serve you for the next four years.
