The Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting Feb. 11 to allow comment on the aquifer exemption in the Goliad Formation.

According to an EPA public notice, on Dec. 4, 2012, the EPA issued an aquifer exemption to Uranium Energy Corporation in the Goliad Formation, allowing UEC to initiate in-situ mining of uranium near the community of Ander in Goliad County.

The exemption removes the protection provided by the Safe Drinking Water Act from four sands of the Goliad Aquifer. Together with a state issued permit, the aquifer exemption allows UEC to extract uranium through in-situ mining, a process in which a hole is drilled into the ore deposit and a leaching solution is pumped into the deposit to extract the ore and bring it to the surface.

While approval for the aquifer exemption still stands, EPA will consider comments to determine whether the agency should withdraw its approval or reaffirm it, according to the public notice.
