Republican Refugio County Judge candidates talk election

Monday's profiles spotlight candidates for the Republican Party nomination for county judge in Refugio County. The winner of this race will face incumbent Democrat Rene Mascorro in the Nov. 4 general election.• Name: Robert (Bobby) Blaschke

Why do you want to serve in this position?

I want to make a positive difference in all aspects of county business. I care about all residents of our county and have the leadership experience and time to manage our county affairs in a fair and consistent manner.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I am a lifelong resident of Refugio County. I have enjoyed a successful and professional career in manufacturing with the DuPont Company in Ingleside. The past 10 years, I have served as DuPont's safety, health, and environmental manager. I preside over the Coastal Plain LEPC for Aransas, Refugio and San Patricio counties.

I served on the Woodsboro ISD Board of Trustees for 18 years and the Refugio County Groundwater Conservation District Board from 2001-2005. Currently, I am serving on our Refugio County Community Development Foundation Board. These experiences have made me very familiar with budget planning and ad valorem taxation.

If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

I will actively listen and work hard to effectively communicate with all county citizens. I will serve our county with a strong work ethic. I will ensure a structured governing process that successfully meets the needs of the greater good of our county. This can be narrowed to the basic beliefs that I support: Effective, responsible and open county government;

sound fiscal policies; actions that enable community development; a healthy business climate; Fair and consistent oversight of all county business.

I will work very hard to keep the best interests of our county first.

Why do you want to serve in this position?

I am asking to be your full-time judge. I want you to know that I will watch over the taxpayers by having a plan and goal for our future. I would like our county to be a place where our children want to remain here or to return post education and be able to work in our county and raise their children here. Refugio County is a wonderful place to live and those in the decision making seats need to look at all the positive and negatives that affect our county.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I have resided in this county since 1977, graduated from Refugio High School in 1979 and began working for the Refugio County EMS for 10 years. I moved from this county to further my education. I returned to Refugio County and completed my masters degree from Texas A&M-Kingsville while commuting from work and school. I have worked for 20 plus years in management and administration. I am confidant that I will meet your expectations of county judge. I am currently the director for a Corpus Christi Ambulance Service. I am also a licensed paramedic (for 34 years), a licensed social worker, a domestic violence counselor level III and am involved with the Coastal Bend Regional Area Council of Government EMS. On numerous occasions you may have seen me or see me in the community during a crisis or emergency. Community involvement and working with others has always been my passion. I am a straight shooter and believe in family, community, respect, honor, integrity and honesty.

If elected, how will you go about effectively serving your constituents?

I promise to be here in a full time capacity as your county judge. I will maintain an open-door policy and keep our communities (all of them) in the forefront, when making decision that affect us all.
