The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center is extending its hours through Friday because of a decrease in blood collections.

Winter weather has led to more illnesses as well as canceled blood drives in areas across the state, according to a center's news release.

The extended hours at the 1109 Sam Houston Drive location in Victoria are now from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"We usually have support from other community blood banks; however, many other areas have been affected by winter weather and are not able to assist us at this time," said Ron Chavez, director of the blood center's Victoria Donor Room. "We are relying on local blood donors to help during this difficult time."

Anyone 16 years old weighing 120 pounds (with parental consent form) or at least 17 years old weighing 110 pounds and in good general health may donate blood.

For more information, call the Sam Houston location at 361-576-3651 or visit southtexasblood.org.
