Fashion tips with Haili Z: Wes Gordon interview

Wes Gordon Runway at Fashion Houston.

I attended Fashion Houston and took a quick break between runways to follow up with Wes Gordon, an up-and-coming designer hailing from New York City.

The designer has already collaborated with none other than Manolo Blahnik (on his own runway) and tells us more about what his line is inspired by and the Hollywood A-list already wearing the line, and he gives a surprise for readers - what music video his FW13 collection is appearing in this month.

How are you liking Houston?

Love Houston! It's a quick trip - I got here this morning, and I'm leaving tomorrow morning. Too short, but I love Houston.

I will have to give you a list of places to eat next trip.

I went to El Tiempo on Navigation (Boulevard) today. I had to do Tex-Mex in Houston. It was delicious.

What is currently on your playlist, and what are you playing on the runway tonight?

What's currently on my playlist? Oh my gosh, you're totally throwing me. Tonight, we are playing the same playlist we played at New York Fashion Week. The first part of our show is the resort collection, and it's a song by Nonono, "Pumpin Blood," and for the actual show, the songs are a mix of late '90s.

Is it inspired by grunge - Nirvana? That type of late '90s?

There is a touch of that. It's really inspired by late '90s elegance like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Gwyneth Paltrow in "Great Expectations," but then there is a touch of grunge, and we use that with the music.

You'll hear a little bit of Nirvana "Come As You Are" in the mix. The finale is actually Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" but a string version of it. So it's there as kind of an undertone definitely.

What shoes are you using on the runway tonight?

Our shoes are Manolo Blahnik for Wes Gordon. We partnered with Manolo, and we developed the shoes this season.

What kind of woman do you see wearing your collection? Is she independent? Is she chic?

She is both of those things. She is confident; she knows what works for her. She's buying pieces because she loves them and will buy a coat from us and wear it with jeans or dress it up and wear it with a gown.

So these pieces are shift pieces that are transitional?

Shift pieces that aren't costumes for her. She likes her personality, and she's not trying to hide it. You know, she's trying to find something that she loves that makes her heart beat, and it's special but at the same time, it's [her]. She knows herself well; she appreciates that our pieces are special - the fabrics, the construction - and she's aware of that and appreciates it.

I know that you already have a celeb following. Who do you envision wearing your collection next?

We've had a really great year of celebrity dressings with Kerry Washington, Mrs. Obama and Gwyneth Paltrow. My favorite, who I haven't dressed yet, is probably Cate Blanchett. I am obsessed with Cate Blanchett.

I could totally see her wearing this, too.

Right? Tell her.
