Gonzales rolls career-high 770 series score

Robert Gonzales knew it was going to be a good night on the lanes when he started league play with a 279 game.

Competing in the Sugar & Spice League, a nine-pin count spare in the fourth frame was the only blemish in the 11-strike 279 individual game.

Gonzales added games of 244 and 247 for his best-ever 770 series.

Mike Osterson also had a good week on the lanes with a 267 high game contributing toward a 714 set for his high. He also added scores of 256-677 and a 265 individual in two other leagues.

Other scores of note for the men were Mike Wortham (246-697), Gary Hatter Jr. (249-694), Eric Smith (277-689), Ray Rendon (685), Kenny Schupbach (256-670), Mark Redding (247-670), Mike Stacy (668), Bucky Hartman (665), Mike Michalec (665), Tom Crowe (258-664), Steve Zeplin (661), Martin Almendarez (655), Abe Suarez (649), Justin Tweedle (649), Kevin Rosales (278), Michael Rodriguez (254) and Todd Pfuhl (252).

Trudy Wortham had the high series for the women with a nice 223 high game contributing toward an even 600 series in Sugar & Spice action.

She rolled the only 600 series for the women this past week.

Other nice scores were by Jessica Thomas (210-592), Pat Robles (228-590) and Christine Speer (588).

Vera Cruz Restaurant bowlers for the week were Gonzales with an 821 (Sugar & Spice) and Robles with a 701 (Sundowners).

I want to wish Chris Guerra a speedy recovery after having foot surgery last week. Hopefully, she will be ready for the city tournament coming up in March.

My condolences go out to the family of Jack Snow, who passed away last Sunday at the age of 79.

Snow had served as a director in the Victoria Men's Bowling Association many years ago and continued league bowling until his health prevented him from competing.

Although he enjoyed the competition, he was easygoing on the lanes.

I remember one time, he started a game in the Red River League with six strikes, and in the seventh frame, he bowled a backup ball and stopped his string of strikes.

When his team captain, Larry Stroud, asked him why he changed from a hook to a backup, Snow smiled and said, "I wanted to see if I could keep striking with a different delivery."

With his wife, Sarah, and son, Rick, preceding him in death, it leaves his grandson, Scott, to carry on the Snow bowling legacy.

The entry deadline for the 82nd annual Texas State Open is Saturday. Late entries will be accepted with a late fee based on availability.

The VUSBC City Tournament's entry deadline is Feb. 21. Get your entries in for two competitive tournaments.

Pro notes

The first week of PBA League competition was broadcast Feb. 9 and was very exciting to watch.

The competition is based on a one-game singles, doubles, trio and team event, with one point going to the winners of the first three events and three points for the team winner.

The singles event is contested by each team's franchise player, and in the first week, it was a match with Sean Rash (Brooklyn Styles) going head to head with Jason Belmonte (LA X).

Belmonte won with a 255 against Rash's 223 for the first point.

In the Scots Doubles (partners alternate shots), the Styles duo of Jason Sterner and Walter Ray Williams defeated Mika Koivuniemi and Parker Bohn III, 238-234.

In the trio match, the Styles again prevailed with the team of Tom Smallwood, Williams and Rash defeating E.J. Tackett, Andres Gomez and Belmonte 247-218 to take a one point lead.

In the team event, LA X featured an international team roster with Belmonte (Australia), Koivuniemi (Finland), Gomez (Columbia), Tackett (USA) and Bohn III (USA).

LA X won the match by a score of 237-215 to advance to the semifinal round in the eight-team competition by a four- to two-point margin.

In all four events an open frame by a bowler decided who won the match. PBA League competition continues Sunday on ESPN.
