Jaguars snap losing streak to Javelinas
Linda Falkenstine spent a good portion of Friday night pacing back and forth behind the seats along the left-field line at Riverside Stadium.
Nathan Falkenstine knew what his mother was doing and wasn't surprised.
"That's Ms. Linda," Falkenstine said. "She's always nervous. It's been like that since high school. She does that. It's nothing new."
Falkenstine had no difficulty keeping calm and pitched six innings of three-hit ball to lead the Jaguars to a 7-3 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Falkenstine, Cory Hulsey and Andre Del Bosque combined a four-hitter to help the Jaguars snap a six-game losing streak to the Javelinas (2-4) while improving to 4-7 on the season.
"This is definitely a momentum game carrying us into the next few games," Falkenstine said. "Just the fact we beat a ranked team gets the guys pumped up so we'll see what happens."
Falkenstine had seven strikeouts and threw 61 of his 102 pitches for strikes. He shut out A&M-Kingsville for five innings before yielding two runs in the sixth.
"Nathan has pitched well for us," said UHV coach Terry Puhl. "He's really come along as a junior. I see some exciting things. He'll be pitching here for the year and going up to Canada. He's really coming into his own. He's a great kid who makes great grades."
The Jaguars had 10 hits and scored five runs in the third inning to chase A&M-Kingsville starter Dallas Ponder.
Dylan Blaha, who had three hits, started the scoring with a RBI single. Kyle Bludau and Robert Zaragoza each followed with two-run singles.
Bludau added a RBI single in the fifth, and both his hits came against left-handed pitchers.
"When they were bringing in the lefties, coach Puhl said we better expect it because we have four or five in the lineup," Bludau said. "You just have to be ready for it. You try and stay in there and battle and come out with a hit."
The Jaguars also played errorless defense and turned two double plays.
"That's a big deal," Puhl said. "That five spot really changed the whole ballgame. I think later on, when they had a little rally, we got a double-play ball, and that really helped."
The Jaguars will travel to Constellation Field in Sugar Land on Saturday to play Texas Wesleyan at 1 p.m. The teams will conclude the two-game series at Riverside Stadium at noon Sunday.
"We got good pitching and some timely hitting," Puhl said. "Some balls fell in for us. It was just a good all-around ballgame for us."
