Four Victoria area Girl Scout troops have sent 74 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to an Army unit in Afghanistan.

Angela Martinez, the co-leader of the Victoria Girl Scouts, said every year the Victoria Girl Scouts send cookies to troops, but this year, the troop leaders decided they wanted to make it personal. Martinez contacted an old family friend, Edwardo Molina, 37, of Victoria, who is deployed to Afghanistan, to ask him if the girls could send cookies to his unit.

"To me, I really think it's important for the girls to learn that it's not just about selling the cookies," Martinez said. "They're giving back to the community and giving back to the troops."

Molina's wife, Monica Molina, of Victoria, said she and her husband found the gesture "really sweet."

Her husband has been in the Army for 10 years and is serving on a 400-day deployment in Afghanistan with an Army reserve unit from Yoakum.

This is her husband's third deployment, she said. The first two were to Iraq.

"The basic mission is to go and get all the troops home, to shut down all the stuff that they need to and bring everybody back," she said of her husband's deployment.

Molina said her husband was in the Boy Scouts and has always had a soft spot for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She said he buys the cookies every year.

The support of Molina's unit, which includes 19 men and three women, will continue for Victoria Girl Scout troops 9567, 95111, 95119 and 95112.

"Once we run out of Girl Scout cookies, we will continue to send them care packages. We will do that until they come home," Martinez said.
