Debris is scattered in a flatbed truck in front of the historic Zahn House located at 107 South DeLeon St. in Victoria after its roof collapsed Monday morning.

Clegg Services is trying to move the 153-year-old Zahn House from the corner of Santa Rosa and DeLeon streets to a private lot at 310 S. Wheeler St.

So far, the second story of the home has been removed because it would knock power lines during the move, said Dereck Talkington, a Clegg Services supervisor.

On Monday, crews also took the front porch's roof down because the wood was too rotten to be moved. They also placed steel beams underneath the house to raise it up, Talkington said.

He said crews will begin raising the house from 16 inches off the ground to 38 inches off the ground with a hydraulic jack unit Tuesday.

"It's just a slow process," Talkington said.

A demolition permit was requested for the Zahn House in June, but historians and downtowners got together in July to bounce around ideas on how to save it.

Ben Caraway, owner of Caraway Plumbing, plans to restore it and make it his private guest house.

Victoria Preservation Inc. hopes the Zahn house will be reentered into the National Register of Historic Places, according to an earlier report.
