UHV coach Terry Puhl could take a glass half-full approach and appreciate how close his team had come to beating St. Mary's and St. Edward's.
But Puhl preferred to take the realistic view and come to terms with another two losses.
"Tonight, what I think is we beat ourselves," Puhl said. "Last night, coming back the way we did. We always seem to be chasing. The teams we've played to start the season have all been quality, quality teams. Hopefully, we can maintain the level of play and cut down on the amount of mistakes."
A night after dropping a 9-8 decision to St. Mary's in 11 innings, the Jaguars (5-10) returned to Riverside Stadium on Wednesday and came up on the short end of a 5-3 decision against St. Edward's.
The reason for the latest loss was plain to see on the scoreboard, UHV had six hits and committed seven errors that led three unearned runs.
"We had seven errors and it's going to be hard to win any game when you make seven errors, especially when you have more errors than hits," said UHV first baseman Josh Boothe. "We've just got to try and clean up our defense and try to get our pitchers out of the innings quicker so they can go further along in the games."
Boothe hit his first home run of the season - a solo shot in the fourth inning - and the teams were tied at 3 going to the eighth.
But the Hilltoppers (7-4) scored an unearned run in the eighth and took advantage of a UHV mental error to add an insurance run in the ninth.
"The defensive lapses were terrible. They cost us the ballgame. Puhl said. "They actually swung the bats pretty well. They hit the ball hard. The bottom line is we could have gotten out of a lot of those innings. That's a good team. In my opinion, that's the best team we've played all year."
The Jaguars also scored on a steal of home by Dylan Blaha in the first inning, and a RBI single by Brandon Bohnanon in the fifth.
"I feel like we're hitting the ball well," Boothe said. "We're hitting a lot of line drives. I know I need to hit the ball harder more often. It's just a work in progress. We need to turn it all on and hopefully, things will stop dropping."
