The Victoria Fire Department welcomed three new firefighters to its ranks Tuesday afternoon.

The new firefighters were gifted new helmets with bright yellow shields on them. The color of the shield represents they are new to the department and reminds veterans to look out for them on the scene.

"We're going to make sure you go home at the end of the day," Fire Chief Taner Drake said.

Stephen Kohls joined the fire department after working for the Port Lavaca Fire Department. He was joined by his wife and son at the ceremony.

Trevor Montgomery, who is from the Austin area, said his first job application was sent to the fire department in Victoria.

"I knew it had to be God's will," he said.

Will Jernigan was unable to attend the ceremony Tuesday because he was responding to an emergency call. Jernigan, who is from the Austin area, graduated from Austin Community College.
