My son is a student at the University of Houston-Victoria. Who do I turn to if I have questions, and how do I get involved?

University of Houston-Victoria officials think that parent and guardian support is an important part of a college student's success and encourage families to be involved with the university.

"College students need to have someone they can turn to who supports their college journey," said Vera Akinkuotu, UHV student development and parent programs coordinator. "We want to give our parents all the resources they need to help their students succeed by creating an open-door policy with students, parents and the community."

There are several ways parents can get involved and stay informed about what is happening at UHV. The university created the Parents Assisting with Student Success program to provide parental assistance.

As the parent liaison, Akinkuotu helps parents and students with the college transition. She also organizes events that bring families together at UHV.

New this semester, UHV is holding a Parent Open House the first Friday of each month. They are open to parents of current or prospective students who have questions for Akinkuotu about opportunities at UHV and advice on college life. The first open house will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 7 in Room 1135 of Jaguar Hall, 2705 Houston Highway.

UHV also is hosting its first Family Day on March 22. This event will allow families to visit the university campus and see what UHV student life is like. The event will include activities and food for the families. Akinkuotu and other UHV Student Services staff members will be on hand to talk to parents about university opportunities.

Parents who want to show their student that they are thinking about them can send cupcakes or cookies from the UHV Sweet Shop. This is a good way to celebrate birthdays or provide encouragement during finals, Akinkuotu said.
