A 16-year-old Edna student called the Edna Police Department Monday morning moments before taking her own life, authorities said.

The girl, a sophomore at Edna High School, died of a fatal rifle shot wound.

Edna Police Chief Clinton Wooldridge said the teenager's emergency phone call was received by police at 8:15 a.m.

She was discovered by officers at her home in the 400 block of South Progress Street and pronounced dead at 9 a.m. by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Dwayne Taylor.

Grief counselors were made available to the students Monday. Wooldridge said the school held a short assembly to address the girl's death.
