Editor, the Advocate:

I would like to explain a couple of items that appeared in the Advocate article Jan. 10 regarding my withdrawal from the race for county commissioner. When I spoke of the program to help volunteer fire departments achieve better ratings, the correct name of the organization which oversees those ratings is the Insurance Services Office. It bases the rating of fire departments on several factors, including training, equipment, water supply and response time. At the time, I was coordinator with De-Go-La Resource Conservation and Development.

With the help of Commissioner Gary Burns, I contacted County Fire Marshall Ron Pray and introduced him to the folks with the state of Texas who could help conduct a study of all departments in the county. Pray recognized the opportunity to upgrade the standing for the volunteer departments and worked very diligently to accomplish the task at hand.

I want offer my thanks to Pray for seeing that project through to accomplish the goal. He certainly deserves the credit for getting the job done.

Jerry Pearce, Victoria
