Americans in need of affordable health care

Editor, the Advocate:

I have known a number of people who have been financially ruined by health care costs because they couldn't afford health care insurance. Others have lost their entire estate to end-of-life health care costs or couldn't get insurance because of preexisting conditions.

I have long hoped that the United States would join the rest of the world and develop a comprehensive health care system. Democrats and Republicans alike shared this goal.

I am saddened that the GOP has now decided that their No. 1 goal is to eliminate the Affordable Care Act. What's worse, it appears that GOP lawmakers now have no intention of even trying to improve the health care system. They don't intend to unveil a health care plan of their own. They don't actually intend to do any substantive work on the issue at all. If even one GOP lawmaker expressed a sincere interest in trying to get the Affordable Care Act to be more effective or function more smoothly, I must have missed it.

Rather than working together to eliminate imperfections, the GOP seems to be willing to throw out the baby with the bath water. I think this is a mistake. There is a real need for universal health care.
