Mary Laughter Frels was memorialized with a scholarship fund established in her name. The fund was endowed by her brother, John G. Laughter. Frels, a former school teacher in Jackson County, died last month at the age of 102. She was a charter member of the John Brewer Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century.

Colonial Dames met Jan. 10 for their annual business meeting at the Power Home. Plans for community and veterans services were discussed, with two guests assisting with the process. Judie Allen, member of Daughters of the American Revolution, and Brenda Gail Novosad, member of Daughters of the Republic of Texas, reviewed the processes involved in promoting history in educational settings in their respective organizations.
