CUERO

Jan. 17

Receipts: 1,849

Had 350 cows and 33 bulls. The packer market settled back a couple of dollars as first of year enthusiasm met reality, so an adjustment was made. Still a strong market for a limited supply.

The calf market was stronger by as much as $8 to $15 on some classes and by as much as $20 on certain classes of lighter calves. Market has started the year with a big up-swing in demand for stocker as well as feeder calves. No negatives in this market, so a wonderful start to 2014.

Packer bulls: Heavyweights, $92-$105; lower grades, $70-$92.

Packer cows: breakers, $65-$80; boning cows, $65-$85; canners and cutters, $82-$95; light and weak, $38-$53.

Palpated dry cows (Brahman bred cows - each): $1,900-$2,300; other bred cows, $110-$129; pairs: $1,000-$2,100.

Because of the large number of cows this week, we are unable to establish a calf market before press time. All indications are that the calf market has been steady so far this week after last week's big run-up in prices.

Our website cuerols.com will be updated later, and the calf market will be on there by Saturday morning.
