Food service inspections

The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun Counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.

FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING JAN. 17

El Taco Restaurant, 711 W. Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 28. Wash hands before putting on gloves. Use gloves when shredding cheese. Do not cut raw bacon on the same food-preparation surface while shredding cheese. Work on date-labeling cooked and ready-to-eat foods, cut vegetables, pico, etc. Do not put knives in hand-washing sink. Do not store cleaning chemical next to the pancake mix. Repair the urinal as well as the leaking toilet in the women's restroom and the leaking sinks in the men's and women's restrooms. Need a thermometer in the white Whirlpool. Thaw meat in cooler or under cold running water. Ice down cut vegetables. Need a light shield in the kitchen. Four facility or equipment violations.

Beef 'O' Brady's, 6220 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 15. Keep paper towels at the hand sinks. Label soap container and silverware cleaner. Repair the leak under the hand sink. Do not store utensils in between tabletop and counter. Five facility or equipment violations.

Cracker Barrel No. 1, 112 Sam Houston Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 15. Need labels on ice bags. Kool-Aid drinks cannot be sold individually. Dispose of out-of-date lunch meat. Deli Express sandwiches need a use-by date. Keep ice scoop on a clean, sanitized surface. Clean the ice dispenser at the soda fountain. One facility or equipment violation.

Shop-Rite Grocery, 3006 E. Red River St., Victoria. Demerits: 14. Dispose of expired medication. Post the dish-washing policy. Keep paper towels in the restrooms. Clean the ice machine. Store the ice scoop on a clean, sanitized surface. Two facility or equipment violations.

TA dba Travel Centers of America, 802 E. York St., Ganado. Demerits: 13. Improper cold-hold temperature. Improper hot-hold temperature. Corn dogs in store at 116 degrees, reheat to 165 degrees or discard after four hours from time placed in warming unit. Need thermometers in front coolers. One facility or equipment violation.

The "Other" Store No. 1, 2407 Port Lavaca Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 13. Post the procedure on how to wash utensils. Keep paper towels at the hand sink. Clean the ice machine and store utensils on a clean, sanitized surface. Two facility or equipment violations.

Times Market No. 103, 1749 W. Austin St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 11. Ice bags need labels. Dispose of expired medicine and bologna. Keep soap and paper towels in the restroom. One facility or equipment violation.

Shellfish Sports Bar and Grille, 2615 N. state Highway 35, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 10. Employees need cups with lids and straws. Spray bottles need to be labeled as well as the bleach bucket. Need to post current permit. Two facility or equipment violations.

Sharda Food Store No. 2, 1403 Sam Houston Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 10. Need a policy for washing. Date-label burritos. Wash, rinse and sanitize dishes. Replace pickle tong holder. Place other tongs on a clean, sanitized surface. Two facility or equipment violations.

McDonald's No. 1, 3112 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 9. Keep paper towels at hand washing sink. Need thermometer in Beverage-air cooler. Clean the ice machine. Three facility or equipment violations.

Lowe's Super S No. 157, 1707 W. Main St., Yorktown. Demerits: 9. Improper cold-hold temperature. Dispose of expired food.

The Donut Palace, 537 W. Main St., Yorktown. Demerits: 9. Improper hot-hold temperature. Sausage rolls and other meat products were not held at 135 degrees for more than four hours.

Texas Traditions and Bakery, 234 E. Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 7. Store vegetables above the raw meat. One facility or equipment violation.

Cracker Barrel No. 4, 6007 N. Main St., Victoria. Demerits: 7. Dispose of expired medication. Keep ice scoop on a clean, sanitized surface. Clean the ice machine and tong container. One facility or equipment violation.

Victoria Residence and Rehabilitation, 114 Medical Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 7. Wash hands with soap and water. Keep soap at the hand sink. One facility or equipment violation.

Ganado Cafe, 118 South Third St., Ganado. Demerits: 6. Improper cold-hold temperature. Repair a small leak under the three-compartment sink. Need thermometer in single door cooler. Two facility or equipment violations.

The Texan, 526 W. Main St., Yorktown. Demerits: 4. Dispose of expired medication.

Falcon Point Lodge, 165 Lodge Road, Seadrift, inspected Jan. 9 with 3 demerits. Reinspected Jan. 13 with dishwasher repaired.

Golden Boy Corrals, 5102 N. Navarro St., Victoria, inspected Dec. 17 with 31 demerits. Reinspected Jan. 8 with all violations corrected.

Lowe's Super S No. 157, 1707 W. Main St., Yorktown, inspected Jan. 8 with 9 demerits. Reinspected Jan. 10 with all violations corrected.
