Calhoun varsity soccer will become a reality next school year.
The Calhoun County school board approved the addition of varsity boys and girls soccer Monday night, and the teams will be implemented during the 2014-15 school year.
"We were hoping to involve more kids in soccer," said Calhoun County Superintendent Billy Wiggins. "It was a perfect opportunity to start the program."
Athletic director and head football coach Richard Whitaker believes soccer would be an opportunity to keep students involved in sports.
"It keeps them motivated in school," Whitaker said. "We've had a growing support."
Calhoun County ISD passed a $65 million bond in November, which will allow the school to fix the local stadium for varsity soccer play next year.
