Wes Moore, youth advocate, Army combat veteran and social entrepreneur, will speak at noon Feb. 13 in the VISD Fine Arts Center, 1002 Sam Houston Drive, as part of Victoria College's 2013-14 Lyceum Lecture Series.
In conjunction with Moore's visit, the VC community is invited to read "The Other Wes Moore" and join in dialogue about themes from the book, which is available to VC students and employees for a discounted rate of $9 at the VC bookstore.
Additionally, Victoria College's Tutoring Center and the Academy of Lifelong Learning are teaming up to host a series of Reading Roundtables for students, faculty and staff to discuss the book.
The Reading Roundtable events will be in the VC Student Center Meeting Rooms A-D on the following dates: 12:30 p.m., Thursday; noon, Feb. 5; and 10 a.m., Feb. 13.
The book tells the story of two youth, both named Wes Moore, who were born blocks away from each other in the same decaying city. One grew up to become a Rhodes Scholar, Army officer and White House fellow. The other was sentenced to life in prison for murder.
The Lyceum Lecture Committee also invites book clubs, schools, social groups and individuals to read the book and join in dialogue about themes from the book prior to the author's Feb. 13 visit. Discussion questions at the back of the book will facilitate conversation. The book's regular price is $16.24 at the VC bookstore.
