Educator, community leader receives Yoakum chamber award
John Fling recently won the Yoakum Area Chamber of Commerce's community service award.
Fling received the Paul Gustwick Award at the recent chamber membership banquet.
He spent 37 years as an educator, starting as a band director and ending as superintendent of Yoakum schools. After retirement, he worked seven years at Yoakum National Bank.
Fling served on the Yoakum Community Hospital Board for 23 years. He has also been a member of the Yoakum Lions Clubs for 37 years, serving as president, vice president, secretary and district secretary. He has also been involved with the FFA programs, served on the chamber board for 10 years and served two years as board chairman for First United Methodist Church.
He is married to Agnes Fling, and they have two grown sons, John Fling and Jason Fling, and grandchildren.
Other award winners were Rosaisela Ramirez, Leader of Tomorrow award; Paul Berger, Educator of the Year; Jahn Refrigeration, Business of the Year; and Connie Zimmerman, Spirit Award for dedicated service to the chamber.
Board officers for the chamber are Therese Ferry, chairwoman; Carl O'Neill, past chairman; Karen Barber, chairwoman-elect; Shannon Blaschke, secretary; and Jim Miculka, treasurer. Directors are Edward Nieto, Dianna Hanzelka, Francisco Montejano, Brenda Coleman, Julie Smith and Dean Madden.
