When Harold Tiemann, owner of Tee's Music House, saw a Howell Middle School band supplies list that had omitted his shop's logo - he did a double-take.

"It just didn't make any sense," Tiemann said. "I wasn't sure if they could do that with public money."

The flier, which was sent to eight Howell Middle School students, included a list of supplies with a copy of the Collins Music Center logo at the bottom of the sheet.

Diane Boyett, Victoria school district communications director, said the omission of Tee's Music House was a mistake made after a band instructor resent the supplies list for students with percussion instruments.

"This is not our practice," Boyett said. "We do not promote one vendor over another vendor."

Boyett said the letter that went out Wednesday did not include any logos; it contained the contact information and was not an advertisement for any company.

"We strongly encourage parents to use the information that was provided to compare prices at other vendors and make a decision that is in their family's best interest," Boyett said. "Victoria ISD does not require the purchase of band equipment from a particular vendor."

Randy Collins, owner of Collins Music Center, said he was surprised when he heard the news.

"I've been on the other side of this at other school districts," Collins said. "I've never been happy about it."

Tiemann said he was satisfied with the way the district responded to his complaint.

"It speaks highly of the superintendent and of the director of fine arts, Ken Peach," Tiemann said. "It shows that they take things like this seriously and are willing to take care of it."
